Asphalt roofing is a common and inexpensive roofing material and makes up the majority of residential sloped-pitched roofs. There are two common types, fiberglass and organic. Organic shingles are typically made of waste paper saturated with asphalt, while the former is comprised of a base layer of glass fiber reinforcing mat. The mat is made from wet fiberglass bonded with resin. The mat is then coated with asphalt which contains mineral fillers and makes the fiberglass shingle waterproof.
A newer design of fiberglass asphalt shingle, called laminated or architectural, uses two layers bonded together with an asphalt sealant. Laminated shingles are heavier, more expensive, and more durable than traditional 3-tab shingles. Laminated shingles also give a more varied, contoured visual effect to a roof surface.
