Asphalt shingles are the most common residential roofing material in North America as they are inexpensive and easy to install. There are two basic types of asphalt shingle - organic and fiberglass. Both types are comprised of asphalt applied to one or both sides of an asphalt-saturated base and are covered in slate, quartz, brick, stone, and ceramic granules. The top layer of granules protect against ultra-violet rays and physical damage. More recent applications are mixed with copper to prevent the growth of algae.
A more recent design, known as architectural, is comprised of two separate layers bonded together with an asphalt sealant. Architectural shingles are heavier and more durable than traditional 3-tab shingles.
